The net rent is adjusted to even out consumption and keep costs down.

On 1 July 2022, there was a new online rental that not many people know about. The aim of the new online rental is to distribute electricity consumption more evenly throughout the day and in that way keep costs down. At the same time, we will get a more correct distribution of the costs.

The net rent should provide a more reasonable distribution of the costs

The electricity network is paid for in full by the customers through the network rent. In general, it is the case that those with small homes and low simultaneous consumption will pay a smaller share than today, while those with larger homes and high simultaneous consumption will pay a larger share. These still have good opportunities to adjust their consumption and thus reduce the internet rent - if they make a small effort of their own.

Spreading the electricity consumption over the day keeps costs down

We must make better use of our power grid by avoiding excessive power consumption at the same time. When many people use a lot of electricity at once, the network must be expanded even more. It costs money. Today, consumption is high in the morning and in the afternoon. If we distribute some of the consumption more evenly throughout the day, we avoid building unnecessary power grids that cost a lot of money and lead to encroachment on Norwegian nature.

In addition, the pace of electrification is increasing - which means that electricity consumption and the load on the grid are increasing. More and more electric cars and the general electrification of transport and industry contribute to this.

You can save money by taking simple steps

The most important thing to remember is to even out consumption. This means that most of the electricity consumption does not occur during the same hour. You can save on internet rent if you use the network when there is good capacity and if you even out your consumption. For example, that you charge the electric car calmly and safely at night, and make sure that the electric car does not charge in the afternoon at the same time as a lot of other consumption.

What's new with new online rent?

Until now, you have paid for consumption in kWh (energy term) and a fixed monthly amount (fixed term). The monthly amount has been the same, regardless of how you use electricity. What is new is that the fixed link must be differentiated according to power, that is, how much capacity you need in the power grid. Those who need a lot of capacity pay more than those who need little capacity.

In the new online rental model, the fixed rate will be based on the average of the 3 hours you used the most electricity in the previous month, spread over 3 different days. That is, if you normally have a fixed connection of 5kW but are "unlucky" for an hour and exceed this, it can give you an addition of NOK 200 that month. (Price may vary from company to company)
